The Federal Government has begun implementing a new financial support package for retired civil servants, with 175 former employees of the Federal Public Service already receiving about N1.1 billion in additional exit benefits.
The beneficiaries are workers who retired between January 1 and August 31, 2026, under the Federal Government Exit Benefit Scheme, a new arrangement designed to provide retiring public servants with financial benefits beyond their regular pensions.
The National Pension Commission (PenCom), which disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, said the scheme became operational on January 1, 2026, following its approval by the Federal Executive Council.
Unlike the pensions paid under the Contributory Pension Scheme, the new benefit is an additional payment available to eligible Federal Government employees at retirement.
The development means that affected retirees are entitled to receive the exit benefit alongside their pension entitlements, potentially providing additional financial support at a period when many former workers are adjusting to life outside active service.
PenCom explained that the scheme forms part of the Federal Government’s arrangements for providing eligible employees with an additional financial benefit upon retirement.
With the first 175 retirees now paid approximately N1.1 billion, the implementation marks an early phase of the government’s new retirement benefit framework for federal civil servants who meet the eligibility requirements.
