For a child, home is expected to be the first place of safety — the place where an adult’s embrace means protection, reassurance and trust. That sense of security is at the centre of concern in a disturbing child-abuse case in Anambra State, following the arrest of a 36-year-old woman in Onitsha on September 10.
The Anambra State Police Command said the woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, was arrested after intelligence linked to a disturbing video allegedly showing the sexual abuse of a minor. Four children, aged two, three, six and nine, were rescued during the operation, while sex toys and other items were recovered.
Although the investigation is still ongoing, child-protection experts have long warned that sexual abuse can leave effects that go far beyond the immediate physical experience. For a young child, an abuse experience can distort the very things childhood should be built around — trust, affection, safety and confidence in adults.
The psychological wounds may not always be visible. A child may become withdrawn, fearful, unusually anxious or struggle to understand what happened to them. Others may experience difficulties with relationships and trust as they grow, particularly when the person allegedly involved is someone they depended on for care and protection.
That is what makes allegations of abuse within a family environment especially painful. Children are dependent on adults to recognise danger, establish boundaries and protect them from situations they cannot understand or defend themselves against. When that protection is allegedly breached, the emotional consequences can be particularly difficult for a child to process.
The police said the rescued children are now a priority of the investigation and that arrangements would be made with appropriate child-protection and support agencies to ensure they receive care, counselling and other assistance. Their identities and privacy are also to be protected.
The command said the husband of the arrested woman was being interrogated to establish whether he had any connection with the alleged offence, while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether other persons were involved.
For the children, however, the most important part of the story may not be the arrest or the investigation. It is whether they can gradually regain the confidence that adults can be trusted, that their bodies and boundaries matter, and that they are worthy of protection.
The police have commended residents, vigilante operatives and bloggers whose information helped bring the allegation to their attention. Such intervention matters because children who are unable to speak for themselves often depend on observant adults to notice warning signs and act.
As the investigation proceeds, the case is a reminder that protecting children is not simply about preventing physical harm. It is also about protecting their innocence, emotional wellbeing and ability to grow into adults who can trust, love and feel safe in the world around them.
