Maiduguri Gets N20.9bn Infrastructure Boost As Zulum Commissions Flyover, Roads, Schools

Maiduguri on Sunday received a major infrastructure boost with the commissioning of projects valued at more than N20.9 billion, including a nine-span flyover, dualised road, drainage network and educational facilities across the Borno State capital.

The projects, unveiled by Governor Babagana Zulum, are designed to address some of the city’s pressing challenges, particularly traffic congestion, poor drainage, road safety and access to educational infrastructure.

The N15.96 billion Post Office flyover, the fourth of its kind in Maiduguri, was completed in 11 months after its award in 2025 to Chinese construction firm, Eighteenth Engineering Company.

Zulum said the nine-span structure was constructed at a total cost of N15,958,518,518.21, describing it as part of efforts to improve movement along one of the city’s major transportation corridors.

According to him, the flyover would ease traffic congestion, enhance road safety and facilitate the movement of people and goods within Maiduguri.

The governor also commissioned a 2.5-kilometre dualised road and five kilometres of drainage from Budum Tandari Junction to Kasuwan Shanu, executed at a cost of N5,002,552,300.08.

The infrastructure package extended beyond transportation, with the commissioning of Larawaram Community Senior Secondary School and Shehu Sanda Kyarimi 1 Primary and Junior Day Secondary School, further expanding the state government’s investment in public education.

Zulum said the projects collectively reflected his administration’s drive to improve urban mobility, strengthen infrastructure and create conditions capable of supporting economic activity and social development.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, who participated in the commissioning, congratulated the people of Borno, describing residents of Maiduguri as the major beneficiaries of the projects.

Sule commended the Borno government for executing the infrastructure, saying the projects were undertaken for the benefit of the people and wider humanity.
