Cardiff is already experiencing the commercial ripple effect of a potential Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury showdown, with hotels around the Principality Stadium reportedly filling up even though the blockbuster heavyweight bout has yet to receive final confirmation.

December 11 has emerged as the preferred date for the proposed all-British encounter, with the fight potentially taking place in the early hours of December 12 to suit its expected Netflix audience in the United States.

The unusual timing has made the Principality Stadium’s operating restrictions a key issue in preparations for the event. The venue normally has a 10:30pm curfew, meaning organisers would need the necessary approval for a bout that could begin around 2am UK time.

Cardiff’s suitability has nevertheless strengthened after the stadium’s history of hosting major boxing events beyond conventional hours. Joe Calzaghe’s 2007 clash with Mikkel Kessler was among previous contests staged at the venue that extended late into the night.

Wembley had also been considered for the fight, but its usual 11pm curfew reportedly created difficulties with the proposed broadcast schedule. Madison Square Garden in New York was another option raised during discussions, although Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn have continued to favour a British venue.

Hearn has previously indicated that Joshua could have commanded greater financial returns by fighting in the United States but opted to honour the commitment to stage the long-awaited encounter in Britain.

The growing demand for accommodation is already providing an indication of the potential scale of the event. Reports say hotels including The Parkgate, located next to the stadium, as well as the city-centre Marriott and Holiday Inn, have recorded no availability around December 12.

The proposed fight would bring together two of Britain’s most prominent heavyweight names, with Fury entering negotiations with a professional record of 36 wins, two defeats and one draw, while Joshua has recorded 30 victories against four defeats.

Fury’s two losses came in consecutive fights against Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, while Joshua has been attempting to rebuild since his stoppage defeat to Daniel Dubois that same year.

Despite the growing signs of commercial interest in Cardiff, the fight remains subject to final contractual and venue arrangements. Until those are settled, the city’s hotels may be offering an early indication of demand for an event that has not yet been officially confirmed.
