US President Donald Trump is set to defend his administration’s military campaign against Iran when he addresses world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
The appearance comes as the conflict continues to disrupt international trade and energy flows, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. Channels Television reported that Trump is expected to use the UN platform to defend Washington’s position and present his administration’s foreign policy as a demonstration of renewed American influence.
Beyond Iran, Trump is expected to highlight his efforts to end the Gaza conflict and expand the Abraham Accords, which have established diplomatic ties between Israel and several Arab countries.
The president’s appearance is also expected to revive his criticism of the United Nations. Trump has repeatedly attacked the organisation since returning to office, while Washington has faced scrutiny over its financial obligations to the global body.
During the high-level UN gathering, Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Venezuela’s interim leader Delcy Rodriguez.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to speak before Trump. Lula has previously objected to what he described as US interference in Brazil’s domestic affairs as the country moves towards another presidential election.
