The Police Service Commission (PSC) has begun a four-day training programme aimed at strengthening data security and privacy practices among its officials amid growing concerns over the handling of sensitive information.
The Comprehensive Data Protection Awareness Programme, which commenced on Monday at the Commission’s corporate headquarters in Abuja, is being organised in partnership with Charistech Consulting Ltd., a licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation.
Declaring the programme open, PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), stressed the importance of protecting data in modern policing and public administration. He urged participants to use the training to improve the Commission’s capacity to comply with Nigeria’s data protection requirements.
According to the Commission, the programme covers regulatory compliance, risk mitigation and secure handling of information, with particular attention to teams involved in sensitive operations. It is also expected to strengthen institutional awareness and reduce the risk of data breaches.
The Chief Executive Officer of Charistech Consulting Ltd., Philip Aiwekhoe, said the training curriculum was designed in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.
The programme runs from September 21 to 24 and includes all staff and members of the Commission’s Board, while prospective Data Protection Officers are scheduled for a dedicated session on September 23. Officials of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) were also present to observe the training.
