Cross River State-born broadcaster, Richard Edoki, has earned a place among the finalists for the 2026 Community Radio Awards in the United Kingdom, with his work in using broadcasting to promote cultural understanding and community engagement in Cornwall coming under the spotlight.
Edoki, who hails from Igbo-Ekureku in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, is a volunteer broadcaster with CHBN Radio, a community and hospital station in Cornwall. Through his programme, African Vibe With RichyBongo, he has created a platform for African voices, music, heritage and lived experiences within a wider Cornish audience.
His recognition is particularly linked to the role of his broadcasting in connecting communities from different cultural backgrounds. Rather than focusing solely on entertainment, his programme provides space for African diaspora experiences that may receive limited attention in mainstream regional media, while introducing wider Cornish audiences to African perspectives and traditions.
The nomination also builds on an earlier recognition from the Devon and Cornwall Police Positive Action Team, which honoured Edoki among community leaders, volunteers, ambassadors and partner organisations contributing to stronger relationships within the region.
According to THISDAY, which reported the development, the police recognition reflected Edoki’s use of his voice and broadcasting platform to encourage dialogue and create connections across cultural lines. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen relationships between communities and a policing service seeking greater representation and engagement.
Edoki’s emergence as a finalist comes as the Community Radio Awards marks its 10th anniversary of recognising presenters, volunteers, producers and stations contributing to communities across the UK. The 2026 finalists were announced ahead of the awards ceremony scheduled for October 24, following the National Community Radio Conference hosted by the UK Community Radio Network.
Chair of the Community Radio Awards, Rebecca Steers, described finalist status as recognition of the dedication, creativity and commitment of volunteers, presenters and teams serving their communities. She said the anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of community radio to communities across the country.
The winners will be announced at the October 24 ceremony, but Edoki’s nomination has already placed the story of a broadcaster from Igbo-Ekureku on a wider international platform, highlighting how community radio can provide a meeting point for cultures, amplify underrepresented voices and foster understanding among diverse populations.
