The fallout from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in Agege has opened a fresh political front around Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, after two politicians identified with his political camp defected to the Allied People’s Movement (APM) to pursue their 2027 Assembly ambitions.
Ganiyu Egunjobi and Azeez Yusuf, who sought the APC tickets for Agege Constituencies 1 and 2 respectively, were unable to secure the party’s nominations despite reportedly enjoying Obasa’s backing during the primaries.
Rather than abandon their bids, the two aspirants subsequently obtained tickets on the APM platform, setting the stage for a three-way political narrative involving the defeated aspirants, the APC and Obasa’s political influence in Agege.
The development has since generated questions within political circles over whether the movement represents an independent response by the two politicians to their defeat or signals deeper disagreements within the ruling party’s local structure.
Obasa, who secured the APC ticket to contest the Lagos State House of Representatives election in 2027, has not been established as having directed or sponsored the move by the two former APC aspirants.
However, the fact that both politicians are regarded as members of his political camp has brought renewed attention to the Speaker’s influence in Agege, where he has maintained a strong political presence over the years.
The speculation has also revived the sensitive issue of party loyalty, with some political actors interpreting the decision of the two aspirants to contest under another platform as a possible challenge to the APC’s control of the constituencies.
Those close to Obasa, however, have rejected any suggestion of anti-party activity by the Speaker, insisting that Egunjobi and Yusuf made their decisions independently after failing to emerge from the APC primaries.
The latest development therefore leaves the immediate political question less about Obasa’s personal candidacy and more about what the defection of two politicians associated with his camp could mean for the APC’s contest in Agege.
With the 2027 elections still ahead, the emergence of the two APM candidates has added another layer to the political contest in the constituency and placed Obasa’s local political network under fresh scrutiny.
