Nigeria’s 2027 senatorial contest has taken a heavyweight turn, with serving governors, former governors, former Senate leaders and other prominent politicians appearing on the final list of candidates published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The commission’s publication has formally put the 109 senatorial seats into electoral contention, giving voters a clearer picture of the political figures seeking places in the next National Assembly. INEC has published the official senatorial list for the January 2027 elections.
Among the prominent names are Senate President Godswill Akpabio, seeking another term in Akwa Ibom North-West; Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, contesting Kano North; and former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole, who is seeking to retain his Edo North seat.
The list also brings a number of serving governors into the parliamentary contest. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is running for Imo West, while Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya is seeking the Gombe North seat. Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed are also among governors whose political futures are now tied to senatorial contests.
Former governors are equally prominent on the ballot, including Ahmed Lawan, Abdulaziz Yari, Seriake Dickson, Orji Kalu and Ifeanyi Okowa. Their return to the legislative arena adds another layer to a race already populated by experienced lawmakers and new entrants.
The significance of the list extends beyond individual constituencies. The eventual winners will determine the political composition of the 11th Senate and, consequently, the personalities available for its principal offices.
That calculation has already attracted attention because the Senate leadership rules were amended earlier in 2026 before the controversial changes were subsequently reversed. The reversal removed a potential restriction on first-term senators seeking principal positions and kept the leadership contest open to a wider field.
Akpabio’s return bid therefore comes against a backdrop in which several politically experienced figures are also seeking Senate seats. Oshiomhole, Barau and other established politicians are among those whose electoral fortunes will become relevant to the composition and subsequent leadership calculations of the chamber.
Party strength will also be an important part of the picture. The APC has fielded candidates across all 109 senatorial districts, while the ADC, PDP, APM and NDC have also presented candidates in large numbers, according to the published list.
For individual constituencies, however, the national calculations will ultimately be decided at the ballot. The presence of a former governor, serving governor or senior lawmaker on the list does not determine the outcome of any senatorial contest.
The senatorial election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, alongside the presidential and House of Representatives elections, according to INEC’s published timetable.
With the final list now public, the Senate race has moved from speculation over possible aspirants to a defined contest involving established political figures, returning lawmakers and fresh contenders across the country.
