The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved the 2027 electoral process into another crucial phase, announcing October 9, 2026, as the commencement date for nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the date on Monday in Kaduna while opening the commission’s North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 General Election.
The announcement comes after the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise produced more than 10.7 million new registrants nationwide, significantly expanding the pool of Nigerians seeking to participate in the next general elections.
The October 9 deadline therefore places fresh attention on whether newly registered voters will successfully obtain their PVCs and become fully positioned to exercise their franchise when Nigerians head to the polls in 2027.
Apart from first-time registrants, Nigerians who transferred their voter registration or applied for replacement of lost or damaged cards are also expected to participate in the collection exercise.
The commission said arrangements were being put in place for the distribution of the cards across the country, with voters expected to collect their PVCs at designated centres.
The development is particularly significant for the millions of Nigerians captured during the latest registration exercise, as registration alone does not end the electoral process. They must still obtain their voter cards and ensure that their details are correctly captured before election day.
INEC has urged eligible voters to make use of the collection window and avoid waiting until the final stages of the electoral process before retrieving their cards.
The commission’s announcement also comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify, with political parties, candidates and voter mobilisation groups increasingly turning their attention to the expanding electorate.
For INEC, the PVC collection exercise will provide another major test of its preparations for the 2027 elections, while for the newly registered voters, October 9 marks the point at which their entry into the voters’ register begins to translate into practical participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.
