Tanzania has changed its visa rules for Nigerian travellers, removing the extra immigration approval previously required before travelling to the East African country.
The new arrangement means Nigerians will now go through Tanzania’s regular visa process instead of the additional clearance procedure attached to the Referred Visa Category.
Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department announced the change in a notice dated September 25, 2026, signed by its Chief Spokesperson, ACI Paul Mselle. The department said the decision followed amendments published in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026 and took immediate effect.
Before the change, Nigerian applicants under the referral system had to secure approval from the Office of the Commissioner General of Immigration before travelling. They were also advised to submit visa applications at least two months ahead of their intended travel dates.
Nigerians can now apply through Tanzania’s official immigration online portal or designated entry points under the standard procedure. However, the change does not grant visa-free access to Tanzania, as Nigerian passport holders still require a visa to enter the country.
Legit.ng reported that Tanzania’s Ordinary Visa for tourism costs $50 and permits a stay of up to 90 days. Applicants must also have passports valid for at least six months, with at least one unused visa page, while other entry requirements may apply.
