Russia Hits Kyiv Bridge Again As Merz Visits Ukrainian Capital

A key bridge in Kyiv has come under another Russian drone attack as Moscow intensifies strikes on infrastructure across the Ukrainian capital, with the latest incident occurring during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to the city.

The Pivnichnyi, or Northern Bridge, was struck on Sunday for the second consecutive day, damaging parts of the roadway and a heating system serving communities in northeastern Kyiv. Two people were injured in the attack, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The latest strike forms part of a wider series of attacks on bridges crossing the Dnipro River. The Southern Bridge was also targeted earlier, while restrictions on some crossings have disrupted movement across the capital.

The attacks have added pressure to Kyiv’s transport network, with the bridges serving as important links between the eastern and western sides of the city. The crossings are used daily by residents and commuters travelling across the Dnipro.

The renewed strikes came as Merz arrived in Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reaffirm Germany’s support for Ukraine. During his visit, the German leader announced additional assistance for Ukraine, including military support and funding for repairs to damaged energy infrastructure.

Russia has said the bridges targeted in the attacks are used to move Ukrainian troops and military equipment. Ukrainian authorities continue to respond to repeated strikes on critical infrastructure as the conflict persists.
