The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) says its N66-per-litre petrol discount was introduced before the Federal Government announced a separate price-reduction measure aimed at easing the impact of rising fuel costs.
According to Daily Trust, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said the discount took effect on October 1 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and would run until October 31, 2026.
Odeh explained that the initiative was intended to offer customers some relief and should not be interpreted as a return to government-funded petroleum subsidy.
The clarification follows an announcement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, who said the Federal Government’s planned reduction to ₦1,350 per litre would prioritise public transport operators. He also maintained that the measure did not constitute a subsidy.
NNPCL said its discount applies only at its retail outlets and does not establish a uniform pump price nationwide or change the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.
The company added that it would continue working with the government and other stakeholders to reduce the burden of rising fuel prices on households and businesses while ensuring reliable product supply.
