The Military Pensions Board has held discussions with representatives of military veterans’ associations in a bid to address concerns and clear up misunderstandings surrounding the implementation of recently approved pension increases.
The meeting, led by the board’s chairman, Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem, took place amid controversy over the new rates approved by President Bola Tinubu for retired military personnel.
The engagement followed the board’s October 2 announcement that payments under the revised pension structure had commenced. The adjustment came after an increase in the salaries of serving military personnel, which also triggered corresponding changes to pension benefits for retirees.
In a statement issued by Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed, the board said the meeting allowed officials to explain how the revised rates were being implemented and respond to questions raised by veterans’ representatives.
The board noted that the discussions helped improve understanding of the new payment arrangements, adding that the representatives expressed satisfaction with the clarifications provided and welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with the authorities.
The meeting also highlighted the need for sustained communication between the board and military retirees, with both sides encouraged to use established channels to resolve concerns relating to pension payments.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of retired military personnel, the board pledged to maintain transparency, encourage constructive discussions and address pension-related complaints promptly within its responsibilities.
