U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are reportedly considering removing Kimberly Guilfoyle as ambassador to Greece following a series of allegations concerning her conduct before and during her diplomatic tenure.
According to The Independent, a senior U.S. official said on Sunday that Trump and Rubio were angered by the reports and could decide Guilfoyle’s future this week. The official said Rubio was particularly displeased, having recently visited Athens, where Guilfoyle participated in his official engagements as the allegations continued to emerge.
The controversy has prompted calls from senior congressional Democrats for a formal investigation. A second U.S. official told The Independent that the State Department’s inspector general was examining the claims, although it remained unclear whether a formal investigation had been opened.
Reports by The Wall Street Journal alleged that Guilfoyle asked a prominent Trump donor to pay a $100,000 credit card bill, offering access to senior administration officials in return. Other allegations concern gifts and services she reportedly received, remarks allegedly made to a Greek official and claims that she promoted the interests of a Greek construction and energy company.
Guilfoyle’s lawyers have denied wrongdoing, saying the money sought from the donor was payment for public appearances and speaking engagements completed before her nomination. They also maintained that she complied with State Department guidance and travel regulations when using private aircraft.
Her legal team said Guilfoyle had served with integrity and was considering legal options to recover the alleged outstanding fees and pursue other potential claims. The ambassador has not personally addressed the allegations in detail.
Rubio, who initially defended Guilfoyle, later challenged journalists questioning him about the reports during his visit to Athens last week. He said he would not treat claims from unnamed sources as established facts without independent confirmation.
Separately, The Daily Mail reported tensions between Guilfoyle and staff at the U.S. Embassy in Athens. The Wall Street Journal also reported that she objected to being excluded from a Greek-themed event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Guilfoyle, a former California prosecutor and Fox News host, was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son. No official announcement of her removal had been reported in the accounts cited.
