Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered emergency fumigation of the river around Igbokoda following complaints of a foul smell after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in the area, raising concerns over possible health risks to nearby communities.
The state government has also directed the provision of protective health supplies, including nose masks, to residents, while the ministries of Environment and Health are expected to take measures to guard against potential disease outbreaks.
According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the governor has instructed Ilaje Local Government authorities to deploy water tankers to supply safe drinking water if assessments establish that the river is too polluted for use. The arrangement is expected to continue until a permanent solution to the pollution concern is implemented, according to Channels Television.
The river serves as an important source of livelihood for Igbokoda residents and neighbouring communities, making concerns over its condition particularly significant.
The development follows the October 5 crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, identified as NAF 931, which was carrying 25 people, including five crew members and 20 passengers. The aircraft was reportedly travelling to Lagos on a routine mission when the accident occurred.
Aiyedatiwa has assured the affected community of the state government’s continued support for the Air Force’s recovery efforts, while pledging to prioritise residents’ safety and welfare.
