Akwa Ibom Plans Staff Quarters, Major Overhaul Of Public Secondary Schools — Eno

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has identified staff quarters and large-scale rehabilitation of public secondary schools as key components of his administration’s emergency intervention in the education sector.

Eno disclosed this on Friday, October 16, 2026, during a ceremony at St Francis Secondary School, Eket, where he joined former classmates and members of the school’s alumni association to honour his former French language teacher, Mr Agbor Moore.

The governor said his experience as a student had reinforced the importance of providing teachers with accommodation within school premises, recalling that Moore lived in the school’s staff quarters about 50 years ago.

According to him, the arrangement helped the teacher maintain closer contact with students, exercise effective supervision and contribute to their academic and social development.

“That’s one of the things we intend to achieve with the state of emergency in the education sector. We are going to extend staff quarters to our secondary schools,” Eno said.

He indicated that the planned intervention would extend the infrastructure model adopted in selected public primary schools to secondary schools, with rehabilitation and staff accommodation among the priorities.

The governor said he learnt through the alumni association that Moore, a Cameroonian married to an Okon Eket woman, was in Akwa Ibom for the funeral of his in-law. He subsequently joined the association in organising the event to recognise the teacher’s contribution to his life and those of his former schoolmates.

Eno credited Moore with introducing him to French and instilling social discipline, adding that teachers deserved recognition while they were still alive to witness the impact of their work.

He also commended the alumni association for initiating the celebration, describing the teacher’s influence as an important part of his personal development.

Responding, Moore praised the governor for remembering and honouring a teacher who had contributed to his formative years, saying the gesture demonstrated the enduring influence of teachers and the importance of gratitude.

He described the event as a recognition of the teaching profession, noting that the relationship between a committed teacher and a former student could endure long after formal education had ended.

The governor also addressed corps members serving at the school, expressing condolences over the death of a young Akwa Ibom corps member who served in Enugu State.

He urged the corps members to pay attention to their health and seek medical assistance when necessary, adding that Akwa Ibom operates a 24-hour emergency ambulance service.

The ceremony was attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah; Head of the Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong; and other government officials and community stakeholders.
