The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reportedly dismantled a suspected illegal production site linked to counterfeit Nivea roll-on deodorants in Makoko, Yaba, Lagos State.
The operation uncovered a facility allegedly involved in manufacturing and packaging deodorants bearing the Nivea brand name, raising fresh concerns about the circulation of potentially substandard personal-care products in the Nigerian market.
Reports published on October 16, 2026, indicate that officials recovered 1,584 bottles of suspected counterfeit deodorants during the raid. Empty containers, product labels, packaging materials and equipment believed to have been used in the operation were also seized.
Two individuals were reportedly arrested in connection with the discovery, while samples of the recovered products and chemicals were submitted for laboratory testing to establish their composition and safety.
The findings of the laboratory analysis are expected to help determine whether the products contain harmful substances or fail to meet the required quality standards. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects’ alleged involvement has yet to be conclusively established.
The development highlights the risks posed by counterfeit consumer goods, particularly cosmetics and hygiene products that come into direct contact with the skin. Products manufactured outside approved regulatory conditions may expose users to unknown ingredients and inadequate quality controls.
Consumers are advised to purchase deodorants and other personal-care items from reputable retailers, inspect packaging for signs of tampering and report suspicious products to the appropriate authorities.
NAFDAC has continued to play a key role in monitoring regulated products in Nigeria, with enforcement operations aimed at curbing the production and distribution of fake and potentially unsafe goods.
