The management of Enugu State College of Education (Technical), Enugu, has reportedly made registration for the Federal Government’s Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) compulsory for all students, warning that non-compliance could prevent them from sitting examinations.
The directive, contained in an internal memo dated October 6, 2026, and signed by the Acting Registrar, Patrick A. Aneke, applies to students in both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and degree programmes, according to SaharaReporters.
The memo directed fresh and returning students to visit the college’s NELFUND desk officer, Dr Rufina Agu, to apply for the loan for the 2026/2027 academic session. It also instructed deans, directors, heads of department and student union leaders to communicate the requirement to students.
SaharaReporters also reported that the college’s Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Bertrand Ekwe, defended the policy in a WhatsApp group, stating that proof of NELFUND registration was required for examination clearance. When a student asked whether those whose parents opposed the loan could continue their studies, Ekwe reportedly replied that it might be difficult.
The report further stated that Ekwe confirmed students without NELFUND receipts would not be allowed to sit examinations for the time being, unless the management changed its decision.
The directive has drawn objections from students who argue that the loan scheme should remain optional, particularly for those able to pay their fees without borrowing. Some students also alleged that the fees displayed on the NELFUND platform exceeded the amounts ordinarily charged by the institution.
