FIFA has sanctioned Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, team manager Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico following their criticism of match officials after Egypt’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) disclosed the disciplinary measures in a statement released on Monday, confirming that Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan were each handed three-match suspensions, while Zico received a five-match ban.
The controversy followed Egypt’s 3–2 defeat to Argentina in the round of 16 on July 6 in Atlanta. Egypt had established a two-goal advantage before Argentina mounted a comeback, with disputed officiating decisions, including a disallowed goal and a rejected penalty appeal, becoming major talking points after the encounter.
In the aftermath, Hossam Hassan openly questioned the fairness of the officiating, accusing the match officials of treating his side unjustly. His remarks reflected Egypt’s frustration over decisions that the team believed had affected the outcome of the contest.
The suspensions could disrupt Egypt’s preparations for upcoming international assignments. Both Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan risk missing the Pharaohs’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Malawi in November, alongside the first fixture of the March international window.
Zico’s punishment is more extensive, with the five-game suspension potentially ruling him out of international action until June, depending on the applicable fixture schedule and implementation of the sanction.
The EFA has confirmed that it has asked FIFA to provide the legal grounds for its decision. The federation intends to examine the explanation before determining whether to challenge the penalties through an appeal.
Meanwhile, FIFA Referees Committee chairman Pierluigi Collina defended the match officials and cautioned against public accusations directed at referees. He maintained that such allegations can damage confidence in the integrity of football and expose officials to personal threats.
The disciplinary action adds another chapter to the fallout from Egypt’s World Cup exit, with the federation now seeking clarification as it considers its next steps.
