Akwa Ibom State has acquired two new ferries for the Oron-Calabar route as the government plans to develop the coastal area into a hub for passenger transport, cargo movement and maritime business.
BusinessDay reported that Governor Umo Eno announced the acquisition in Uyo, disclosing that the vessels measure 24 metres and 18 metres in length. Two more ferries are expected to join the fleet, bringing the planned number of vessels operating on the route to four.
The acquisition forms part of a wider maritime development scheme in Oron, which includes facilities for passenger embarkation, cargo handling and commercial activities. The proposed infrastructure also covers a hotel, warehouse, cold room, floating bar, workshop, recreational facilities and a dedicated jetty for the Joint Task Force.
The state government expects the project to create employment, attract private investment and expand economic opportunities for coastal communities. It is also intended to support fisheries and fish processing, improve the preservation of harvested produce, encourage tourism and strengthen security along the maritime corridor.
Eno said the ferries would be named after former first ladies of Akwa Ibom State in recognition of their contributions to the state’s development.
The governor also highlighted road projects serving the area, including the completed Nsit Atai – Okobo – Oron Road and the ongoing rehabilitation of the 13.5-kilometre Okopedi – Uya Oro Road.
The maritime initiative is part of the state government’s broader economic diversification plans under the ARISE Agenda, with Oron expected to play a greater role in coastal commerce and transportation.
