The heads of Nigeria’s correctional and immigration services will remain in office until 2028 following President Bola Tinubu’s approval of an 18-month extension of their tenures.
The decision followed a recommendation by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to give the boards of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) more time to arrange the appointment of successors and prevent a leadership gap, The Sun reported.
Under the revised arrangement, Correctional Service Controller-General Sylvester Nwakuche will remain in office until May 26, 2028, while Immigration Service Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap’s tenure will run until June 30, 2028.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced the approval in a statement on Monday. He said Tinubu commended the two officials for reforms recorded under their leadership and urged them to sustain the progress.
Nandap was nominated to head the Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and confirmed by the Senate on March 1, 2024. Nwakuche was nominated to lead the Correctional Service in December 2024 and secured Senate confirmation in March 2025.
