A workers’ coalition in the Federal Capital Territory has promised to take President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign to communities across Abuja, with plans to enlist voters through a partnership with the City Boy Movement.
The commitment was announced on Wednesday by the FCT coordinator of Working People United (WoPU), Comrade Musa Fadawa, who said the organisation intended to mobilise support across the territory’s six area councils ahead of the 2027 general elections, Vanguard reported.
Fadawa said the campaign would involve direct engagement with residents in markets, motor parks, workplaces and satellite towns. He added that the group would encourage eligible voters to register, obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate in the elections.
Explaining the organisation’s decision to support Tinubu, the coordinator pointed to what he described as progress in workers’ welfare and infrastructure development. He cited the new national minimum wage, wage awards and discussions between the Federal Government and organised labour as evidence of the administration’s engagement with workers.
He also praised projects undertaken under the president and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, including road works, bridge construction, streetlight installations, school rehabilitation and water infrastructure. Fadawa said the developments had created opportunities for workers and traders while improving movement within the territory.
On the economy, he maintained that the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate were necessary policy decisions despite the hardship associated with their implementation. He called for stronger action against inflation, greater currency stability and improved living conditions, particularly for low-income earners.
The group also identified student financing through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), alongside youth skills and credit programmes, as initiatives it considers relevant to the administration’s economic and social agenda.
WoPU, which describes itself as a labour-focused movement comprising civil servants, teachers, nurses, drivers, artisans, traders, students and private-sector employees, said its endorsement followed consultations among members within and outside the FCT.
Fadawa appealed to workers and other residents to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition, saying the administration should be given another opportunity to continue its reform programme.
