A fire that destroyed two wings of a senior living facility in Clinton, Mississippi, has forced the evacuation of residents, with emergency workers still checking to account for everyone affected.

Newsweek reported that the fire broke out at Brookdale Senior Living at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting a major response from firefighters and other emergency personnel.

The facility houses 102 people, according to Marlee Price-Cook, Clinton’s director of communications. Some residents were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, while others were moved to Morrison Heights Baptist Church to reunite with their families.

Clinton Fire Chief Levius Buckley told local outlet WJTV that firefighters rescued some residents through the building’s windows as the blaze spread.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves described the incident as a terrible situation, confirming that the state health department, several fire departments and emergency crews were involved in the response.

Authorities later said the fire had been brought under control. However, emergency teams continued conducting secondary searches and accounting for residents.
Officials had not confirmed whether anyone died as of Wednesday night.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and will be investigated. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency workers to continue their operations.

Family members seeking information about residents were advised to call 601-926-1224 to speak with a facility representative.
