A 78-year-old man has been charged with causing the death of a police officer in a road accident in Cheshire, England, several months after the fatal collision.
The defendant, David Millar, of Sandbach Road, Congleton, faces one count of causing death by dangerous driving following an investigation into the crash that claimed the life of 29-year-old Police Constable Alice Mayo.
The incident occurred on the morning of February 7 in Arclid, Cheshire, when a blue Fiat 500 driven by Mayo collided with a white Land Rover Defender on Spark Lane. The officer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cheshire Constabulary confirmed on Thursday that Millar had been charged after what police described as a detailed investigation. He has been released on bail and is expected to appear before Crewe Magistrates’ Court on November 23.
Mayo, who served as a beat officer in Macclesfield, was remembered by her family as a woman whose warmth and personality touched many lives.
In a tribute following her death, her relatives described her as “beautiful inside and out”, adding that she had left behind a legacy of joy and cherished memories despite her short life.
They said her loss had left the family devastated, while expressing pride in all she accomplished and the positive impact she had on those around her.
Cheshire Constabulary Chief Constable Mark Roberts also expressed condolences to Mayo’s family, friends and colleagues, describing her as a courageous and dedicated officer who would be deeply missed.
The force said it was providing support to those affected by her death as the legal process continues.
