Residents of Edo State have been urged to report suspicious activities to the police as the State Police Command warns against violence and other unlawful conduct linked to calls for a public protest circulating online.
Channels Television reported that the Command disclosed that it received complaints from members of the public about online posts calling for a demonstration. Its spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, conveyed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Commissioner of Police Patrick Daaor said the Command recognised citizens’ right to peaceful protest but advised those seeking redress to use lawful channels to address their grievances.
He warned that the police would not condone attacks, destruction of property, road blockages or any other conduct capable of endangering public safety and disrupting order in the state.
The Command said measures were being put in place to protect residents and property, urging the public to contact its emergency control room through 08077773721, 08067551618, 08056776365, 08123827225 or 08037646272. Complaints against police officers can also be lodged with the Complaint Response Unit in Benin through 08100389992 or 08150999335.
