Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called for stronger cooperation from traditional institutions in safeguarding community stability as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Speaking at a joint quarterly meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers on Wednesday, Fubara urged monarchs to exercise their influence responsibly, warning that politically motivated actions could deepen disagreements and create security challenges for the state.

The governor appealed to the royal fathers to rise above personal considerations in discharging their responsibilities, emphasising that justice, impartiality and the common good should guide their decisions. The meeting covered the council’s 126th, 127th and 128th quarterly sessions, Channels Television reports.

Beyond the political concerns, Fubara reiterated his administration’s recognition of traditional rulers as custodians of cultural heritage and key figures in community leadership. He thanked them for supporting peace and development and assured them that their welfare remained important to the government.

Addressing concerns over statutory entitlements payable to the traditional institution through local government councils, the governor said the matter was governed by established procedures. He pledged to intervene on issues within his powers and said subsequent information would be conveyed through the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs. He later formally opened the meeting, expressing hope that its discussions would contribute to the state’s continued development.
