Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a ₦12.1 billion support programme for elderly citizens and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), with 500 beneficiaries to receive ₦200,000 each in every senatorial district across the country.
The intervention, under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), will cover all 109 senatorial districts, with 250 persons with disabilities in each district scheduled to receive the grant on December 3, 2026, to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Another 250 elderly citizens aged 65 and above in each district will receive the same amount on December 17 under the RHI Elderly Support Scheme.
The programme will also extend support to veterans.
Tinubu announced the initiative at a stakeholders’ meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) senators and senatorial candidates, where she urged political leaders to ensure that the funds reached deserving beneficiaries without discrimination.
She specifically warned against allowing political affiliation, ethnicity or religion to influence the selection and distribution process, insisting that the intervention must benefit those who genuinely qualify.
The meeting was attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who led APC senators, senatorial candidates and other party stakeholders to the engagement.
Also present were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.
