Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has ordered security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack on the convoy of former Anambra State Governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Calabar.
Otu gave the directive while reacting to the incident, which occurred during Obi’s visit to the state capital, describing the violence as a violation of the peaceful political environment the state seeks to maintain, Channels Television reported.
The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, expressed concern over the incident and extended his sympathy to Obi and members of his delegation.
He maintained that political disagreements should not degenerate into violence or prevent individuals and parties from exercising their constitutional rights, regardless of their political affiliations.
Otu further stressed that his administration would not tolerate acts of intimidation or criminality capable of undermining public order, assuring political stakeholders that Cross River remained committed to providing a peaceful environment for political engagement.
He said security operatives had been directed to conduct a thorough investigation, track down everyone involved and ensure they face prosecution in accordance with the law.
