The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has partnered with the Planning Committee of the Akwa Ibom 2027 Election Debate, organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, towards the successful organisation of the debate.
The partnership was sealed on Monday during a meeting between the university management and members of the Debate Planning Committee at the Vice Chancellor’s office.
The meeting focused on the importance of the debate as a platform for candidates contesting the 2027 elections to present their policies, programmes and vision to the people of Akwa Ibom State in a fair and impartial setting.
Chairman of the Debate Planning Committee, Comrade Ndanti Ekuh, who led the team, said the visit was aimed at exploring areas of collaboration with the university ahead of the debate, themed “WHY YOU?”.
The team included the committee’s Secretary, Comrade NseAbasi Valentine, as well as Comrade Ifreke Nsewo and Comrade Harrison Essien.
Ekuh said UNIUYO’s involvement would add academic value to the programme while strengthening its credibility and relevance. He described the university as an important partner in promoting informed political discussions and greater public understanding of issues affecting the state.
He added that the debate would give participating candidates an opportunity to explain their priorities and proposed policies, enabling voters to compare their positions and make informed decisions at the polls.
The Vice Chancellor of UNIUYO, Prof. Christopher Ekong, welcomed the initiative and pledged the university’s support for the planning and successful organisation of the debate.
Ekong praised the NUJ leadership, led by Comrade Nsibiet John, for its efforts to strengthen political awareness, citizen participation and accountability.
He said the engagement would help voters gain a clearer understanding of the candidates and their approaches to governance, while commitments made during the debate could provide a basis for assessing elected officials.
The Vice Chancellor also stressed the need for governments to combine effective policy implementation with deliberate communication of their programmes, achievements and development plans to citizens, investors and the international community.
He further emphasised the importance of sustainable infrastructure and proper urban planning, citing functional road networks, efficient waste management and well-designed public facilities as key components of development.
According to Ekong, Akwa Ibom should complement its development efforts by promoting its economic opportunities and potential beyond the state.
Ekong expressed confidence that the debate would help voters identify candidates with a clear understanding of the responsibilities of governance.
The meeting ended with the signing of a partnership agreement between UNIUYO and the Debate Planning Committee.
