Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an independent inquiry into the killings and violence that rocked Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area on August 24, 2026, directing the preservation of evidence that could unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The development was disclosed on Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, according to a report by PUNCH, which said Adeleke’s Executive Order established a Coroner Inquest/Panel of Inquiry to investigate the shootings, deaths and injuries recorded around Naira and Kobo Junction and the Motor Park/Garage Area.
The panel, chaired by Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola, is expected to determine the number and identities of victims, establish the immediate and remote causes of the violence and examine whether any individual or group bears criminal responsibility for the deaths.
According to Rasheed’s statement, the inquiry will particularly scrutinise the conduct of security operatives, including whether live ammunition or other weapons were deployed and whether such use complied with applicable laws, rules of engagement and human rights standards.
The government said the panel would also investigate the possible roles of political actors, transport union members, public officials, security personnel and other individuals or groups whose actions or omissions may have contributed to the violence.
Beyond establishing facts, the inquiry has powers to summon witnesses, demand police and medical records, inspect relevant locations and receive oral and documentary evidence. It may also recommend prosecution, disciplinary action, compensation for victims and institutional reforms.
Adeleke further directed the preservation of firearms and ammunition records, station diaries, communication logs, duty rosters, medical and autopsy reports, photographs, videos and other materials considered relevant to the investigation, while measures are to be taken to protect witnesses and victims’ families.
The panel is scheduled to begin sitting within seven days of its inauguration and submit its report within 30 days of its first sitting, subject to an extension approved by the governor. The Inspector-General of Police, Police Service Commission and Osun Commissioner of Police have also been asked to consider interim administrative measures where the continued operational role of any police officer could undermine the inquiry or public confidence.
