Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football with Germany after making 86 appearances for the four-time world champions.

The 33-year-old centre-back, who made his Germany debut in 2014, made the announcement on Tuesday.

Rüdiger was part of Germany’s squads at three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships. He also featured in the team that won the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, while scoring three goals during his international career.

Following his decision, Rüdiger is expected to focus entirely on his club commitments with Real Madrid. His retirement also opens the door for younger defenders to establish themselves in Germany’s national team ahead of future international competitions.
