US President Donald Trump has openly acknowledged that some of the prominent structures being developed in Washington, DC, during his second term are intended to stand as part of his personal legacy, saying he does not expect future administrations to build similar monuments for him.
Trump made the remark in an interview with New York Magazine, following questions about projects including a planned “triumphal arch” and the major redevelopment work being undertaken around the White House.
Asked directly whether the monuments were being built for him, Trump reportedly did not dispute the suggestion, responding: “That’s true. Nobody will do it once I’m gone.”
The comment comes as the president has placed construction and architectural projects at the centre of his second-term agenda, including a proposed White House ballroom that has attracted both political support and criticism.
According to New York Magazine, some congressional Republicans and Trump advisers have expressed concern that the president’s persistent focus on the ballroom could distract from the party’s political messaging ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump, however, has defended the project, telling the magazine that Americans should be grateful for the work being undertaken and insisting that he remains proud of his administration’s construction programme.
The president has also presented the ballroom as a security-related project, citing proposed features including a rooftop drone port, an underground bunker and bulletproof windows.
Another major project is also approaching construction. The administration is expected to break ground within weeks on a 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery, adding to the growing list of large-scale architectural changes associated with Trump’s presidency.
The developments have turned Washington’s physical landscape into an increasingly visible expression of Trump’s second-term priorities, with the president showing little indication that criticism will persuade him to slow the projects.
New York Magazine, in its interview with Trump, reported his remarks on the monuments and the broader construction programme. The president’s comments have consequently placed the question of political legacy at the heart of the debate surrounding the architectural changes taking shape in the US capital.
