Voyager Probes Reveal A 90,000°F Surprise At The Solar System’s Edge

 

Humanity’s farthest-reaching spacecraft have encountered an extreme environment at the boundary of the Sun’s domain, with NASA’s Voyager probes recording temperatures of about 90,000°F in the region where the solar wind gives way to interstellar space, according to USA TODAY News.

The finding offers scientists an unusual glimpse into the heliopause, the vast and poorly understood boundary where the stream of charged particles continuously flowing from the Sun collides with the material and magnetic environment beyond the solar system.

Yet the extraordinary temperature reading does not mean the Voyager spacecraft passed through anything resembling a conventional furnace. Because the plasma in this distant region is extraordinarily sparse, there are too few particles to transfer heat to an object in the same way that air or water at 90,000°F would on Earth.

The significance of the measurement lies instead in what it reveals about the behaviour of matter at the solar system’s outer frontier. Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space in 2012, while Voyager 2 followed in 2018, allowing scientists to obtain direct observations from a region no previous spacecraft had reached.

According to USA TODAY News, the Voyager measurements are helping researchers piece together how the Sun’s protective bubble interacts with the surrounding interstellar environment. More than four decades after their journeys began, the ageing probes therefore remain unlikely but invaluable observers of one of the most remote and mysterious boundaries known to science.
