The trade confrontation between the United States and Canada has entered a new phase, with President Donald Trump moving to block additional Canadian products from the US market in response to Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs.
According to a report by ABC News, the new restrictions will bar the importation of some Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products, motorcycles and mopeds into the United States from September 29, while extending a 50 per cent tariff to additional goods.
The latest measures followed Canada’s decision to impose tariffs of up to 50 per cent on hundreds of American products in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports, deepening an economic dispute between the two major trading partners.
The White House said the measures were intended to prevent what it described as unfair trade practices and protect American producers. A senior White House official said Trump was seeking to “keep a level playing field” while deterring further retaliation from Canada.
The import restrictions will cover several categories of packaged alcoholic drinks, including sparkling grape wine, malt beer, sake, Irish and Scotch whiskies, pisco and singani. Tequila and mezcal packaged in containers smaller than four litres are also affected.
The move is expected to increase pressure on Canadian producers and exporters while potentially widening the economic impact of the tariff dispute across both countries, particularly as Ottawa continues to defend its retaliatory trade measures.
