US President Donald Trump has offered a $5,000 payment to every American adult if voters return Republicans to power in both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump announced the proposed payout, which he called the “Trump Dividend,” while addressing the Republican midterm convention in Texas on Wednesday, linking the payment to the outcome of the November elections.

“So if the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” Trump said, presenting the proposed payment as a benefit Americans would receive if Republicans maintain their congressional majority.

The president provided few details on how the programme would be structured or when payments would be made. He said, however, that recipients would be required to spend the money in the United States.

Trump said the proposed payments would reflect what he described as the country’s economic success under his administration, particularly revenues generated through his tariff policies.

He also compared the proposed payment with the administration’s $1,776 “Warrior Dividend” given to US military service members, describing the $5,000 proposal as the “best part” of his convention speech.

The announcement immediately drew political criticism, with commentators questioning the timing of the offer because it was explicitly tied to Republican electoral success. Republicans are seeking to retain control of both the House of Representatives and Senate in the November midterms.

Trump’s proposal comes as the 2026 congressional elections approach, placing an unusually direct financial incentive at the centre of his appeal to voters.
