Former Cross River State Governor and presidential candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has alleged that some politicians driven by desperation to win the 2027 elections have resorted to human sacrifice.

Duke made the claim in Abuja on Tuesday while receiving the Council of the Wise of the Savannah Centre for Democracy, Diplomacy and Development, led by former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, during its consultations with political stakeholders ahead of the 2027 polls.

According to The Guardian, the PRP presidential candidate also warned that Nigeria’s electoral system requires fundamental reforms, particularly in the manner through which the leadership and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are appointed.

He argued that the electoral umpire could only effectively discharge its responsibilities if it was genuinely insulated from political influence, stressing the need for an electoral system capable of guaranteeing confidence in the democratic process.

Duke further called for tougher sanctions against electoral violence and other actions capable of weakening democracy, maintaining that politicians would continue to engage in dangerous conduct as long as they believed they would escape meaningful consequences for their actions.
