Rabiu Kwankwaso has made another attempt at Nigeria’s highest political office unlikely after opting to join Peter Obi’s presidential ticket under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists at his Kano residence on Sunday, the NDC chieftain described his decision as a sacrifice, maintaining that he and Obi shared the political understanding required to manage the country’s affairs.
The former Kano State governor, who has sought the presidency on three previous occasions, said he was prepared to put his personal ambition aside in support of Obi.
Kwankwaso explained that the decision was influenced by his assessment of Obi’s character and political convictions, as well as their perceived similarities in leadership objectives.
He also brought the country’s regional power-sharing arrangement into the discussion, insisting that the South should retain the presidency until it completes an eight-year spell before the position returns to the North.
The development was reported by The Guardian.
