Local government administrations across Akwa Ibom State are set to come under increased media scrutiny as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) begins preparations for a tour of the state’s 31 Local Government Areas to examine development activities at the grassroots.
The exercise, being organised by the NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council under its Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, is expected to take journalists directly into communities to document projects, programmes and other interventions being undertaken by the respective councils.
The tour will provide an opportunity for the media to examine how development initiatives at the local government level translate into visible projects and programmes within communities.
It is also expected to broaden public knowledge of activities taking place outside the state capital, particularly developments that may not receive regular media attention.
According to the State Council, the initiative forms part of its commitment to strengthening grassroots journalism and ensuring that issues affecting residents across the 31 LGAs receive adequate coverage.
As part of the exercise, journalists are expected to visit project locations, engage local stakeholders and interact with officials of the various local government administrations.
The engagements will enable the media to obtain information directly from those implementing the projects as well as communities where such initiatives are being executed.
John said the Union considered grassroots development too important to be covered only through official statements and routine briefings.
He stressed the need for journalists to have direct contact with communities and observe development activities themselves in order to give the public a clearer picture of what is happening at the local government level.
The NUJ chairman said the media had a responsibility to give adequate visibility to developments across the state while maintaining professional standards in reporting them.
He added that the Union would continue to support journalism that informs citizens, draws attention to community needs and encourages responsive governance.
The tour is also expected to give the various Local Government Chairmen an avenue to present their development priorities and projects to the wider public through direct media engagement.
For the NUJ, the exercise will provide an expanded platform for grassroots reporting, bringing local government activities closer to citizens who depend on the media for information about developments in their communities.
The initiative is expected to generate wider public attention around development activities across the 31 LGAs and strengthen the connection between local governance, communities and the media.
By taking journalists beyond the state capital and into the communities, the NUJ aims to create a more comprehensive picture of development across Akwa Ibom and ensure that grassroots activities remain firmly within public view.
