Sixty-seven Nigerians have returned to the country from South Africa following xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in the country.

According to Channels Television, the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday night aboard a South African Airways flight that landed at about 8:45 p.m.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons were at the airport to receive them.

The returnees arrived less than a week after another 83 Nigerians were brought back from South Africa.

NEMA’s South-West Coordinator, Alex Oturu, said the return was supported by private individuals who provided funds for flight tickets and other assistance to the Nigerians.

Nigeria has previously raised concerns over attacks on its citizens in South Africa and called for greater attention to the safety of Nigerians and other African nationals living in the country.
