The Akwa Ibom State Government has declared Wednesday, September 23, 2026, a work-free day to enable citizens and residents participate fully in activities marking the 39th anniversary of the state’s creation.

The declaration was approved by Governor Umo Eno and announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, on Monday.

According to the announcement, the work-free day is intended to give Akwa Ibom people the opportunity to mark the anniversary and reflect on the state’s 39-year journey.

The government said the declaration was made “in recognition of the significance of the anniversary” and to provide an opportunity for the people to celebrate the years with gratitude to God for His faithfulness, protection and blessings.

It directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the state government, as well as members of the general public, to take note of the declaration and be guided accordingly.

The anniversary activities are expected to bring together residents and stakeholders across the state as Akwa Ibom commemorates its creation on September 23, 1987.

The government urged citizens to participate fully in the activities marking the anniversary and use the occasion to reflect on the state’s journey and its progress over the past 39 years.
