A’Ibom Health Ministry Equips Disease Monitors For Ebola Threat

Akwa Ibom authorities are reinforcing the state’s disease-monitoring network, with health officials asking field personnel in all 31 local government areas to promptly flag symptoms that could indicate an Ebola infection.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel John, issued the charge while addressing Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs) at a session held at the ministry’s conference room in Uyo. He reminded them to apply the prescribed criteria when assessing suspected infections and follow established medical procedures, according to Channels Television.

John disclosed that churches across the state would host public health education activities on Sunday, November 1. The outreach will cover measures against Ebola, routine vaccination for children and other priority health matters. He also promised logistical assistance, including transport and equipment, to help the officers carry out their assignments.

During the meeting, State Epidemiologist Dr Nchiek Eneh took participants through the standards used to determine whether a person may be classified as an Ebola suspect. Mrs Aniefiok Akpan, the state’s lead surveillance officer, discussed the arrangements required to prepare for a possible outbreak, including cooperation among agencies and efficient information flow.

Laboratory procedures also featured at the session, with State Laboratory Focal Person Mrs Enobong Ubong explaining how specimens should be obtained, secured and conveyed for testing. She stressed that proper handling was essential to reduce risks to medical personnel and preserve sample integrity.

Director of Public Health Services Dr Bassey Akpan called on the officers and their assistants to maintain close contact with communities and alert the appropriate authorities whenever a suspected case emerges. He noted that prompt notification could help health teams act before an infection spreads further.

The commissioner also urged participants to counter misinformation by sharing guidance from recognised health institutions. He said their field observations and records should be submitted accurately to support planning and coordinated action at both state and national levels.
