Akpabio Warns Governors Against Early Political Moves, Urges Tinubu to Back Lawmakers’ Return

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned state governors against pursuing new political offices before completing their tenures, as he called for continuity among lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to The Sun, Akpabio gave the warning at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, shortly after Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma announced his intention to contest for a Senate seat in the next election.

Speaking from his experience as a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio urged governors to concentrate on their responsibilities to the people rather than begin seeking other positions prematurely. He served two terms as governor before moving to the National Assembly.

The Senate President also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to encourage serving lawmakers to return to their seats after the 2027 elections, expressing confidence that their continued presence would reinforce the administration. He pledged the legislature’s loyalty and said he hoped to bring opposition lawmakers into future engagements, subject to Tinubu’s approval.

Akpabio, who said he had spent more than 25 years in politics, attributed his electoral success to maintaining close ties with the electorate. He urged political officeholders to remain connected to the people, presenting that relationship as central to sustaining public support.
