Mr. Paul Usoro, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, is one of Nigeria’s most distinguished legal practitioners, a consummate advocate, a respected commercial lawyer, a foremost communications law expert, a strategic litigator, an accomplished arbitrator, and an influential leader whose career has contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Nigerian legal profession.
For more than four decades, Usoro has occupied a place of uncommon distinction in Nigerian law.Through his mastery of advocacy, intellectual depth, strategic thinking, professional integrity and commitment to institutional development, he has built an enduring reputation as one of the country’s most accomplished lawyers and has inspired generations of legal practitioners to see the law not merely as a profession, but as an instrument for justice, development, enterprise and national progress.
Born on September 7, 1958, in Ukana Ikot Ntuen town in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Usoro began his journey from the heart of Akwa Ibom to the commanding heights of the Nigerian legal profession. His story is one of intellectual discipline, professional excellence, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.
He obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree with Honours from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, in 1981, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1982. His early professional experience included a stint with the Benue State House of Assembly during his National Youth Service and subsequent practice with George Uloko & Co., Makurdi. In 1983, he joined Sani Mohammed Kuso & Co. in Kaduna, where his exceptional legal ability and intellectual capacity quickly became evident.
At a relatively early stage of his career, Usoro distinguished himself in complex litigation. He became Head of Litigation at Sani Mohammed Kuso & Co., where he handled challenging matters, including election petitions and proceedings before commissions of inquiry. These early experiences provided the foundation for what would become a remarkable career at the Bar.
In 1985, driven by professional ambition and a clear vision of the kind of legal practice he wanted to build, Usoro founded Paul Usoro & Co. in Kaduna. The firm subsequently expanded its operations, with its headquarters established in Lagos in 1992 and offices later maintained in Abuja and Uyo.
Today, Paul Usoro & Co. is recognised as a full-service Nigerian law firm with expertise across major areas of commercial and legal practice.Through the years, Usoro has distinguished himself as a nationally acclaimed litigator and transaction expert whose practice encompasses commercial litigation, banking and finance, oil and gas, power, telecommunications and communications law, election petitions, arbitration and other complex areas of legal practice.
His particular contribution to communications and telecommunications law has been especially noteworthy. He became deeply involved in some of the major transactions and regulatory developments that accompanied the transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. His expertise placed him at the intersection of law, technology, regulation and business at a time when Nigeria’s communications industry was undergoing profound change.Infact, he is seen as Nigeria’s Number 1 telecommunications lawyer.
Among his notable professional engagements was his service as Chief Legal Consultant and Sole Legal Practitioner for Nigeria, and as the only African member of the six-member Auction Control Team for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Spectrum Licence Auction that paved the way for the emergence of major telecommunications operators in Nigeria. His work in this area reflected his ability to combine sophisticated legal knowledge with commercial understanding and strategic judgment.
His accomplishments in advocacy are equally remarkable. Over the course of his career, he has represented governments, public institutions, multinational corporations, major Nigerian companies, financial institutions, political parties, candidates and individuals in complex and high-stakes disputes.
He played a strategic role in the defence of Akwa Ibom State in landmark Supreme Court disputes concerning oil wells involving Rivers and Cross River States. He also handled significant election-related matters involving political office holders and candidates, including cases that traversed Nigeria’s superior courts. His work in these matters demonstrated not only his courtroom ability but also his capacity for strategic case management and long-term legal planning.
In one of the notable commercial disputes in which he played a leading role, Usoro was instrumental in the recovery of N16 billion for Access Bank Plc in a complex, multi-jurisdictional dispute involving proceedings in Nigeria and several other countries. He also played leading roles in significant banking, corporate, arbitration and commercial disputes, further establishing his reputation as a lawyer trusted with difficult and consequential assignments.
His exceptional advocacy skills were formally recognised in 2003 when he was elevated to the Inner Bar as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), one of the highest professional distinctions in the Nigerian legal profession. Two years earlier, in 2001, he had been admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, reflecting his expertise and growing influence in alternative dispute resolution.
But Usoro’s contribution extends beyond the courtroom.He has played an important role in the institutional development of the Nigerian legal profession, serving in various capacities within the Nigerian Bar Association and contributing to discussions and initiatives concerning the future of legal practice in Nigeria. He was a founding chairman of the Communications Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law and was involved in efforts to strengthen professional regulation and modernise the practice of law.
In 2018, his colleagues entrusted him with one of the highest responsibilities in Nigerian legal practice when he was elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association. He served as President from 2018 to 2020, providing leadership at a critical period in the history of the Nigerian Bar and the Nigerian justice system.
As President of the NBA, he brought to the office his considerable experience in advocacy, corporate governance, administration and institutional leadership. His tenure reflected his long-standing conviction that a strong and independent legal profession is indispensable to the advancement of justice, democracy, economic development and the rule of law.
His leadership and professional accomplishments have earned him recognition beyond the traditional boundaries of legal practice.
He has also been associated with several leading corporate and professional institutions and has served on the boards of major organisations, including as Chairman of Access Bank, bringing his legal expertise, governance experience and strategic insight to the corporate environment.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the International Bar Association. He has also undertaken executive education at leading international institutions, including Harvard Business School and INSEAD, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
For Akwa Ibom, his achievements carry an added significance. His rise from Ukana Ikot Ntuen to the Inner Bar and ultimately to the presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association represents a story of distinction that resonates far beyond the legal profession. He has become an enduring example of the capacity of Akwa Ibom sons and daughters to excel nationally and internationally through knowledge, hard work and professional excellence.
