Akwa Ibom State’s growing investment in tourism infrastructure, air connectivity and destination development has earned national recognition, with the state winning two major honours at the Travellers 100 Awards in Lagos.
The awards, presented during the 22nd Akwaaba African Travel Market at Eko Hotels & Suites, saw Akwa Ibom named “Most Active Tourism State in Nigeria,” while Governor Umo Eno received the “Most Influential and Innovative Governor in Tourism” award.
The recognition comes against the backdrop of the administration’s efforts to position tourism as a driver of economic activity, investment and employment under its ARISE Agenda. The state has been developing projects including the ARISE Palm Resort, International Convention Centre, Ibom Hotel and ARISE Shopping City, alongside improvements in aviation infrastructure.
Receiving the honours on behalf of the governor, the Akwa Ibom State Liaison Officer in Lagos, Mr Anthony Isonguyo, conveyed Eno’s appreciation to the organisers, saying the awards would encourage the state to intensify its investments in the sector.
Describing tourism as “the next black gold,” Eno said Akwa Ibom would leverage its natural and cultural advantages to attract visitors, investors and businesses. He also highlighted Ibom Air’s growing fleet, including the recently acquired Airbus A220-300, and the state’s new smart international airport terminal as part of the infrastructure supporting its tourism ambitions.
The governor also pointed to the planned Christmas Unplugged 4.0, scheduled for December 1–31, 2026, saying more than two million people attended the previous edition and that the state was targeting a higher turnout this year. He said the awards would further motivate the administration to build Akwa Ibom into a destination where people can “visit, live, invest, and thrive.”
