Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has pocketed $75,000 after finishing second in the women’s 100m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.
Amusan clocked 12.34 seconds to claim the silver medal, finishing behind American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won the final in 12.22 seconds.
Russell’s victory capped another outstanding season for the American, who had earlier broken Amusan’s world record with a 12.09-second run in Zurich. She also secured her first Diamond League title before arriving in Budapest as the leading contender for the inaugural championship.
For Amusan, the runner-up finish represented the second-highest individual payout at the three-day event, which boasts a record $10 million prize purse. The champion in each individual event receives $150,000.
The Nigerian had reached the final after placing second in her semi-final in 12.49 seconds behind Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who won in 12.45 seconds. Her latest meeting with Russell came shortly after the American finished ahead of her at the Diamond League final in Brussels.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo failed to advance to the women’s 400m final after finishing sixth in her semi-final in 50.50 seconds. Despite missing the final, Onojuvwevwo ended her campaign with another sub-51-second performance in a competition featuring about 400 athletes across 26 individual events and two mixed relays.
