Australian Police Probe Possible Extremist Links After MP Loses Both Legs

Australian authorities are investigating whether anti-government extremism played any role in an incident that left federal lawmaker Helen Haines without both legs, as senior officials warn of growing hostility towards politicians.

Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush said investigators were examining the accused man’s social media activity and speaking with people who knew him. He said police had received no prior intelligence indicating that the suspect posed an immediate danger.

Haines was struck by a car near her office in Wangaratta, northeast of Melbourne, on Monday. Her husband, Phil Haines, confirmed on Wednesday that both her legs had been amputated. Speaking outside the Melbourne hospital where she is being treated, he said she remained stable and that her survival was what mattered most to the family.

According to SaharaReporters, citing the Agence France-Presse (AFP), 43-year-old Brendan Nugent appeared in court on Wednesday over the incident. Prosecutors have charged him with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and harming a public official, a federal offence punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He also faces separate charges involving cannabis cultivation and possession. He did not apply for bail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for February 4.

The case has drawn attention to security concerns surrounding Australia’s elected representatives. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said federal lawmakers were facing increasing online harassment, intimidation and threatening messages.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn urged Australians to show greater civility in public debate, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed concern over the increasingly personal tone of political exchanges. Albanese said elected officials should be able to carry out ordinary duties without fearing violence.

Haines entered federal parliament in 2019 after a career as a nurse and midwife. She has since become known for her work on political transparency, anti-corruption initiatives and climate action. Police have not confirmed a motive for the incident.
