Electricity supply has been disrupted across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states following an indefinite strike by workers of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) began the industrial action on Monday over alleged failure by management to address workers’ grievances, including unpaid entitlements, outstanding minimum wage adjustments and concerns over excessive billing and tariff increases.
The shutdown has affected BEDC operations across the four states, leaving customers without electricity as the dispute between the workers and management continues.
The union’s demands also include concerns over how billing practices and tariff adjustments have affected public perception of electricity workers.
The strike is expected to persist until the issues prompting the industrial action are addressed.
