A 33-year-old bodybuilder, Mateusz Chmura, has died after collapsing on stage during a competition in Telford, United Kingdom, just a day before his 34th birthday, The Independent reports.
Chmura, from Wakefield, collapsed on Sunday, October 18, while competing in the Classic Bodybuilding Medium category at the Physical Culture Association (PCA) British Finals held at the Telford International Centre.
He was attended to by paramedics, local ambulance personnel and a Midlands Air Ambulance crew before being taken to hospital, where he later died despite efforts to save his life.
The PCA, which organised the competition, announced his death on Monday, expressing sadness over the loss and extending condolences to his wife, family, friends and loved ones.
The contest was temporarily suspended while Chmura received medical attention before organisers resumed the event following a meeting with the remaining competitors.
Chmura’s death came barely two weeks after he made his bodybuilding debut at the PCA First Timers show in Yorkshire on October 4, where he finished second.
He was due to celebrate his 34th birthday on Monday, October 19, a day after the fatal collapse.
The circumstances surrounding his collapse and death were not disclosed in the organisers’ statement.
