An Uyo-based electricity user, Mr Imo Udoima, has urged the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution PLC (PHED) to bring his electricity bills, promising to pay and even buy drinks for its workers, following what he described as a marked improvement in power supply in the state.

Udoima made the remarks while commending Governor Umo Eno for what he described as reforms in the electricity sector, saying the improvement had transformed his experience from the previous three to five hours of supply daily.

“Dearest Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution PLC, you can bring your bills now, I will pay and still buy beer for your people,” he said on a Facebook post addressed to the governor and the electricity distribution company.

He attributed the improved experience to the state government’s electricity-sector reforms, telling Governor Eno, “Thank you for the reforms you have undertaken in the Electricity sector of the State.”

According to Udoima, the improvement had been sustained for weeks, with supply now exceeding 16 hours daily. “Band Z wey Nepa been put us for years now, we dey see light wey pass 16 hours in a day now,” he said.

He said the improved supply had also enabled him to use his air conditioner, noting that electricity had remained available for more than 24 hours at the time of his post.

“Since yesterday, I am enjoying AC thanks to the well improved light that we are now seeing and it is more than 24 hours, dem no gree take the light,” Udoima said.

The improved supply, he added, had made alternative power sources less indispensable, prompting him to offer his generator and solar system for sale. “Meanwhile, who wan buy my Generator/Solar system? I wan sell am,” he said.

Udoima’s experience points to the wider household benefits that could accompany more reliable electricity, including increased use of appliances, reduced dependence on backup power and greater willingness by consumers to pay for electricity when improved service is sustained.
